New York-based, Argentinean
composer and conductor Laura Andel premieres Apsides, a newly commissioned work
by
the Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT) for cornet, Fender Rhodes, and
gamelan instruments. The new work will be 15-minutes long and will

Maguire, the ensemble Gamelan
Son of Lion, and
Andel's conduction.
Gamelan Son of Lion is a new music repertory ensemble and
composers' collective based in downtown New York City. The ensemble
uses Javanese-style iron gamelan keyboards made by Barbara Benary, who
co-founded the group along with composers Daniel Goode and Philip
Corner. Gamelan Son of Lion specializes in contemporary pieces written
for the instruments of the Javanese and Balinese gamelan percussion
orchestra. The ensemble has been performing since 1976, making it one
of the oldest and best known new music/homemade gamelans in the country
and has premiered over 150 new compositions by American and
international composers in a variety of styles, adding electronics and
other instruments as needed. In addition to its new music concerts, the
group also presents traditional music of Java and Bali, wayang kulit
shadow puppetry, Indonesian dance, and collaborations with contemporary
choreographers. The 6-12 member ensemble has toured in the United
States, Indonesia, Canada, New Zealand, and Estonia.

Laura Andel at The Kitchen
Laura Andel works in mostly composed pieces for large
ensembles and so the opportunities to hear her work are rare. But
following
notable recordings and performances of her SomnabUlisT and In::tension:
over the last few years, her new Doble Mano for nonet was a major
statement
from the young composer. The piece for cornet, clarinet, viola,
bandoneon,
bass, keyboards and two percussionists received its premiere over
performances
at The Kitchen (May 11th- 12th) and demonstrated the light playfulness
of Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota or her fellow Argentinian Astor Piazzolla
(all adventurous composers regardless of their populist fields), but
with
the composer’s own penchant for contrast and relayed statements. Rhythm
and counter-rhythm crossed from instrument to instrument, section to
section,
with a magical business, like choreographed traffic patterns - the
title
of the 45-minute piece, in fact, refers to a two-way street or multiple
directions. Andel made full use of her orchestra, often setting a low
bass
clarinet tone or high bandoneon cry alone in their respective registers
or putting Taylor Ho Bynum’s muted cornet against clanging finger
cymbals.
Carl Maguire was particularly inventive on Fender Rhodes and the
vibraphone
and various Gamelan percussion setups provided a wide array of
shadings.
When the full ensemble was engaged, the multiple counts and patterns
loped
like the inner workings of an overly complicated clock.

presents SomnambulisT,
a New York city CD release concert as part of the Roulette
Concert Series for Spring 2004 at the Flea Theatre.
This extended 50-minute work for 14
musicians
and conductor, was composed by Laura Andel, premiered the laura andel
orchestra,
and recorded live by Elliott Sharp in October 2002 in New York city. SomnambulisTwas
then released under the Canadian label
Red Toucan Records in April
2003. And now, we celebrate this cd release as part of the Roulette
Concert Series at The Flea Theatre. In SomnambulisT,
the conductor and performers have both a compositional and
improvisatory
role. Part of the music is created and formed through the act of
conducting,
combining actions and sounds that are both well-defined and open.
